Quick Guide to USA Horse Betting
Horse racing is an extremely exciting pastime that can also be
very profitable. After the initial excitement of the race has
died down and you are able to learn the process of betting on
horses you will be able to earn money while watching a fast
paced race. There are a few things that you must understand
before you start horse betting and this short guide will help
you get started.
The first thing you must learn is what the horses themselves are
referred to as. These terms will help you understand what is
going on during and after the race. The ‘Win” is the horse that
comes in first place winning the entire race. Next comes “Place”
which is the second place horse. Last is “Show” or the horse
that comes in third.
Now that you know what the three top placing horses are referred
to as you need to know the other terms you will hear on the race
track. Knowing these terms will help you stay involved and
informed.
Daily Double: If you pick the winners of two, consecutive, races
then you are the holder of a daily double ticket.
Exacta: This refers to picking two different horses one of whom
must win and the other must place. You must specify which horse
will come in first and which will come in second.
Quinella: Similar to Exacta but does not require you to know
which horse will win and which will place. Simply bet on two
horses and when they come in first and second you win. This will
pay less than Exacta.
Pick 3: These tickets let you pick the winners for three,
consecutive races.
Trifecta: In this situation you are picking which horses will
come in first, second, and third during a race. You must specify
which horse will win what honour. For example, if you place a
3-4-5 Trifecta then horse 3 must win (first place), horse 4 must
place (second place), and 5 must show (third place).
Now that you know the different ways to bet and the common terms
you must know learn how to pick a winner. If you are already
familiar with horses and racing this can be simple but if you
are brand new to horse racing there are a few things that you
have got to keep an eye out for. First of all, you must look for
a good rider, a good trainer, and good odds.
Searching for the best jockey and trainer is usually easy. Just
look for a section or information about the “top jockeys” and
find out which horses they are riding. Also look out for the
“top trainers”. Many people make the mistake of looking for a
horse with a cool name or a jockey in a flashing outfit but you
really want to find the best trained horses with the most
skilled riders.
The odds are the second thing that you should take into account.
Numbers can make things complicated but if you are looking at
the horses name then look for 1, 2, and 3’s next to the horses’
name. These numbers represent the times they have come in first,
second, and third. Always choose a horse that has come in these
places recently for the best odds.
Last, but not least, look to see if the horses that have
recently placed first, second, or third placed on courses
similar to the one that they are preparing to race on. On the
right hand side of the name of the horse there are usually
letters. The letters are “C” which means course and “D” which
means distance. If you see a C, D, or both together it means
that the horse has previously raced and won a course of the same
length or distance which increases their chances of winning
again.
These are only a few of the factors that should be looked at
when choosing a winning horse. Many long time horse racing
enthusiasts have developed effective systems and after a time
you will too. The tips found in this short guide will help get
you started in the right direction and will help you enjoy your
first few horse races.
